He befriended the club’s most violent and criminally insane members and lived among them for two years, covertly building a case that would eventually take down the top members of the gang in a massive federal prosecution, even as he risked his marriage, his sanity, and his life. With today’s law enforcement largely moving toward the comparative safety of cyber operations, it became one of the last of its kind, a masterclass in old school tactics that marked Croke as a dying breed of undercover agent and became legendary in law enforcement. Now for the first time, Croke tells the story of his terrifying undercover life in the Pagans—the unspeakable violence, extremism, drugs, and disgusting rituals. Written with bestselling crime writer Dave Wedge and utilizing the exclusive cooperation of those who lived the case with him, as well as thousands of pages of court files and hours of surveillance tapes and photos, Croke delivers a frightening, nail-biting account of the secretive and brutal biker underworld. REVIEW

I just read three pages from the Hunter S. Thompson novel “Hell’s Angels.” Thompson is a very talented author. In that small excerpt I gained more insight into the character of their members, and learned more about what they and their women were about, than I learned about the Pagans after finishing Ken Croke and Dave Wedge’s 285 page memoir. The reason is simple, either the author or Ken Croke himself are terrible when it comes to character development of any kind, and for all the wild escapades and outings they seem to promise through the book, nothing ever really materializes in any interesting or meaningful way. Croke’s characters are extremely dull, flat and one dimensional. So much so that I could hardly tell you the difference between any of them save for their physical features and most basic personality traits. I might not even be able to describe those. Yet he lived among these men for two years. But for some reason, has nothing interesting to say about them in nearly 300 pages. Nothing. Maybe Croke was a good cop, but he’s awful as a story-teller. What’s most frustrating is the book started out well. The first 100 pages fly by and seem to be setting us up for a juicy story, but then….nothing. Somehow I found myself reading page after page almost incredulous over how repetitive it becomes while simultaneously frustrated and completely bored, hoping when he once again stops talking about the toll the experience put on his relationship with his cop wife (another flat,!lifeless character) that this time, something interesting is going to happen with Pagans. But it doesn’t. And the book just continues this way for the remaining 200 pages. The book alternates back and forth from a chapter about the operation from the perspective of the ATF (which is interesting, I’ll admit, on a logistical level) to a chapter involving the Pagans. But the chapters on the Pagans are so vague, dull, and non-description. Croke RARELY, in any detail whatsoever, describes their violent or debaucherous episodes. He NEVER gets into any kind of character study or analysis of any of its members, and he just glossed over what could possibly be the most interesting parts of his story in this very mundane, matter of fact cop voice. I don’t know. I don’t know if I’m explaining this well, but all I can say is that I was very excited and interested in reading about the Pagans, and learning more about them, and this book did not satisfy my curiosity in the slightest. I couldntbtelll you what it’s chapter members are like, the exact type of “bad things” they’ve engaged in, what motivates them it makes them tick, or even what day to day regular life is like for them. The author leaves so much and provides so little. I almost want to rate it two stars, but the ATF related chapters hold it together, and actually offer some interesting moments. But man, what a FLAT tire overall. This book which seemed so exciting at first turned out to be the ultimate DUD.
