"A glorious book that is as entertaining as it is vitally important.” —Ron Chernow "A beautifully crafted, invaluable biography…Schiff ingeniously connects the past to our present and future, underscoring the lessons of Adams while reclaiming our nation’s self-evident truths at a moment when we seemed to have forgotten them." —Oprah Daily Thomas Jefferson asserted that if there was any leader of the Revolution, “Samuel Adams was the man.” With high-minded ideals and bare-knuckle tactics, Adams led what could be called the greatest campaign of civil resistance in American history. Stacy Schiff returns Adams to his seat of glory, introducing us to the shrewd and eloquent man who supplied the moral backbone of the American Revolution. A singular figure at a singular moment, Adams amplified the Boston Massacre. He helped to mastermind the Boston Tea Party. He employed every tool available to rally a town, a colony, and eventually a band of colonies behind him, creating the cause that created a country. For his efforts he became the most wanted man in America: When Paul Revere rode to Lexington in 1775, it was to warn Samuel Adams that he was about to be arrested for treason. In The Revolutionary: Samuel Adams , Schiff brings her masterful skills to Adams’s improbable life, illuminating his transformation from aimless son of a well-off family to tireless, beguiling radical who mobilized the colonies. Arresting, original, and deliriously dramatic, this is a long-overdue chapter in the history of our nation. Read more

REVIEW

Liberty was his North Star. Initially, it was not so much King George that angered Samuel Adams; it was Parliament that allowed for no representation of the colonists and yet could levy taxes upon them. Born in 1722 to Samual Adams Sr., a wealthy malster, Samuel Adams Jr. was educated at Harvard. He inherited the beer business upon his father's death and could not maintain it. He also served as a desultory tax collector. Not until his early forties, did Samuel Adams, using pseudonyms, write pamphlets and newspaper articles to rally his fellow New Englanders to the cause of liberty from Great Britain. Every major revolutionary event from his tabloid report of the Boston Massacre (his name for the incident), the encouragement of the boycott of British goods after the Stamp Act to the Boston Tea Party, had Adams's DNA all over it. He signed the Declaration of Independence and attended the Continental Congress in Philadelphia for all sessions to write the Constitution. Many of his causes were ahead of his time: free education for all boys and girls and the abolishment of slavery. The Pulitzer Prize winning author about this much neglected patriot, breathes life and provides new information about events of which the reader is familiar. Since Adams was so secretive and destroyed much of his correspondence and wrote no memoir, Stacy Schiff had to rely on the diaries and correspondences from Adams's loyal compatriots and fiercest critics. Adams wrote to his wife, "I have long ago learned to deny myself any of the sweetest gratifications in life for the sake of my country." This work is a paean to a true American hero.
