In March 1836, the Mexican army led by General Santa Anna massacred more than two hundred Texians who had been trapped in the Alamo. After thirteen days of fighting, American legends Jim Bowie and Davey Crockett died there, along with other Americans who had moved to Texas looking for a fresh start. It was a crushing blow to Texas’s fight for freedom. But the story doesn’t end there. The defeat galvanized the Texian settlers, and under General Sam Houston’s leadership they rallied. Six weeks after the Alamo, Houston and his band of settlers defeated Santa Anna’s army in a shocking victory, winning the independence for which so many had died. Sam Houston and the Alamo Avengers recaptures this pivotal war that changed America forever, and sheds light on the tightrope all war heroes walk between courage and calculation. Thanks to Kilmeade’s storytelling, a new generation of readers will remember the Alamo—and recognize the lesser known heroes who snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. Read more

REVIEW

I recall when Patrick Wayne reports to Davy Crocket, Jim Bowie, William Travis in "The Alamo", a scene which I never knew why with such a force(reportedly) as had by Col.Fannin, why were they unable to provide relief for the defenders of the mission at San Antonio De Behar. Patrick Wayne says Fannins not coming. I did not know the extent to which, Patrick Wayne was referring to however now I have got a much better idea. The Massacre occurring at Gilead was as much a story as was the Victory by Sam Houstons "Texans" at San Jacinto. I knew something of the Victory at San Jacinto however I had not known of the massacre at Gilead. I learned this and worth a mention it very nearly stopped me cold. It became even something of a shock merely because of the inability to find the truth as it concerns The state of Texas fight for independence. The Mexican Army under Santa Anna apparently had divided his army by at least 1/2, perhaps 1/3, therefore, paving the way for a virtual route in The Battle of San Jacinto however the Massacre at Gilead was an unmistakable point of suffering whereby The Mexican force, having broken off from Santa Anna was nearly 1100-1300 men. This would surpass Col. Fannon's ability with Fannons leadership skills being scrutinized. The look so ever closer was even more frustrating than not knowing the event at all. This was not a discovery that was easy to move through. I do not know why such information would have not been a standard reporting ability however what is most undermining is that the massacre was greater in lives lost than the Alamo. The frustrating cause built with the loss of the Alamo was truly perhaps not an entire vindication but most certainly a victory that Houston showed leadership skills that I care for to this very day. The endless marches as narrated by Brian Kilmeade brought back an account of a Revolutionary war battle called the Battle of Cowpens whereby the forces representing Great Britain chased after a Continental Army only to be defeated by a very excellent strategy, not so unlike what I listened with this particular account. This was not easy and truly it was a-lot more earned than merely the route would suggest. I learned through the reading by Brian Kilmeade about this venerable republic so worth a mention these days. I had thought that perhaps a different reading may well have added a quality in Narrative skill that the reading may have needed however be that as it may the bigger picture was as a result of a day and time that I benefited from as a result. The entire account of the debacle at Gilead was most upsetting providing greater research and as it was learning about leadership skills. Sam Houston's early life is talked of because with this information about Sam Houston it is really one true gauge of just how much there is to learn. I can remember from the motion picture "The Alamo" when Richard Boone in his portrayal of General Sam Houston receives critical information from "The Alamo" suggesting without reinforcements the Alamo can not hold. Houston says "I need your men when they start to whine and bellyache to remind them that 188 of there fellow Texans are hold up in a broken down Adobe mission and we can't come to there aid. We need time so we can mold this army into a fighting force. General Sam got them that time and the State of Texas to boot.
